On April 10, 2008, Focus Features and Sony Music Entertainment announced that the album would be released on November 21, 2008 in the US, Europe and Australia, and later in Japan.
In Europe and the US, the album debuted at number 2 on the UK iTunes chart, selling over 660,000 copies. The compilation has sold over 1.4 million copies in the UK, for a total of over 1.2 million copies worldwide. By the end of 2008, the collection was extended to two gold copies.

October 19, 2008 by Warner Bros. Records hosted the Canadian edition of the album. The disc was released in two formats - CD and DVD. The first disc contains an image of the release of the album on special media and a disc with video, and the second disc contains a processed version of video clips recorded using a computer, with an image of the album on black and white media.
The album was released worldwide on November 22, 2008 and was accompanied by a special edition collector's edition that includes a box set and DVD, which includes a documentary, a biography of Michael Jackson in the "tell the truth" format, songs and lyrics, and a bonus track is a video.
Simultaneously with the start of international sales, the album was released in Japan by Cherry Mix. The album edition of the album contained a fully decorated DVD version of the album and an album box.
On November 14, 2008 it became known that a compilation with a demo and lyrics was released on vinyl on November 27 in the US and Canada.
By the end of 2008, new songs "Not Afraid to Be Naked" and "Earthling" debuted on MTV, and "Space Oddity" aired on US radio stations.
